HEARTBREAKS AND LULLABIES
I’m driving west to see a friend in Memphis, Tennessee
She just gave birth to a baby boy and she named him after me
She lives just north of Germantown near Mullins Station Road
Her baby’s daddy is an oilman from Houston I’ve been told
She played a real good mandolin to my country-ass guitar
When we were young we used to dream we’d both be Nashville stars
She hit the road at twenty-one when I was still in school
I never thought that she would be the one they call the fool
Heartbreaks and lullabies
Are what she sings between the sighs
Remembering the past…the lies
Forgotten plans and alibis
Heartbreaks and lullabies
Worry lines and sad brown eyes
Midnight tears and fireflies
But still she finds a smile for me…
Her little house is all she has; it was her granddad’s home
But after grandma passed away he slowly died alone
Now photographs of honkytonks line the shelves and walls
But all she hears are newborn cries, not cheers in concert halls
Heartbreaks and lullabies
Are what she sings between the sighs
Remembering the past…the lies
Forgotten plans and alibis
Heartbreaks and lullabies
Worry lines and sad brown eyes
Midnight tears and fireflies
But still she finds a smile for me…
All those times that I would think
She’d kill herself with drugs and drink
I wondered just how far she’d sink
Would she see the light standing at the brink
She sang the songs…lived hard and strong
Never saw the years coming on
But now she’s rocking her baby boy in her arms
I’m driving west to see a friend in Memphis, Tennessee
She just gave birth to a baby boy and she named him after me
I have some gifts for mom and babe and photos from our past
Here’s hoping that she breaks the mold before the die is cast
Heartbreaks and lullabies
Are what she sings between the sighs
Remembering the past…the lies
Forgotten plans and alibis
Heartbreaks and lullabies
Worry lines and sad brown eyes
Midnight tears and fireflies
But still she finds a smile for me…
But still she finds a smile for me…
